The Washington Capitals were dealt some very bad news regarding their top defenceman John Carlson as the injury he suffered from a puck to the face is more serious than previously anticipated. Instead of just missing weeks, Tarik El-Bashir reported that it will in fact be months. With the Capitals playing so well, they need to address this problem before all their hard work will have been for nothing. So here are three trade targets on defence that they can acquire to fill the void.
Shayne Gostisbehere
The Arizona Coyotes are clearly still rebuilding, but they are getting close. They have a number of strong prospects but are still looking to trade players away this season. Although Jakob Chychrun is the price many teams want but aren’t willing to overpay for, the Coyotes have one other offensive defenceman the Capitals could use more.
Shayne Gostisbehere won’t cost nearly as much as Chychrun seeing as Gostisbehere is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Since being dealt to the Coyotes, he has scored 23 goals and 77 points in 117 games over a season and a half. This includes five power-play goals and 29 power-play points. He is accustomed to playing top line minutes and could seamlessly transition over to Washington and fill the void left on the top pairing and power play by Carlson for nearly half of the cap hit.
Damon Severson
The New Jersey Devils started the season off extremely hot, but have struggled to win games as of late. This has allowed many of the teams in their division to catch up to them, including the Capitals, so making a trade may be a little tough between them. Despite that, the Devils are looking to free up some cap space and Damon Severson is their top trade candidate seeing as the team has Dougie Hamilton and John Marino under contract for at least four more years.

Severson is a UFA at the end of the season and proved last season that he is more than capable of being a number one defenceman. But he is playing on the third pairing when the defence is healthy. He was the team’s top scorer among defencemen last season with 11 goals and 46 points and led the team in average time on ice by more than two minutes. His cap hit comes in significantly lower than Carlson’s and is almost the same as Gostisbehere. Severson is a bit more capable defensively, so he will come at a steeper price.
John Klingberg
The Anaheim Ducks will be open season for teams looking to upgrade by the trade deadline with lots of players available. But since the Capitals have a specific need with their top defenceman out long-term, John Klingberg should be their target. He was the number one in Dallas for a number of seasons and accumulated 71 goals and 374 points in 552 games. He posted a 67-point season and on four occasions scored 10 or more goals. Klingberg has also reached the 45-point mark in five seasons and recorded 47 points last season.
The Ducks are very poor on the power play and offensively which has negatively impacted Klingberg’s production this season. He has four goals and 11 points in 31 games, but he is still much better than his numbers show. His value will be lower which will be a win for the Capitals if they decide to target him. There’s a good chance Klingberg fits in with Washington as he and Carlson play similar games. The Capitals will also be able to get the Ducks to retain half of the salary since they have a ton of cap space.
Erik Gustafsson will be given a chance to play on the man advantage and provide offence in the short-term, but the Capitals still need to trade for another impact defenceman that can provide offence from the back-end if they want to stay ahead in the playoff race.
