3 Trade Destinations for Panthers’ Anthony Duclair

Anthony Duclair is close to returning for the Florida Panthers and that means they will have to make a trade. They are rostering the minimum number of players each game and have even played a man short when Aaron Ekblad was injured due to cap reasons. Without anyone to send down, they must move a player making $3 million or more before they can activate Duclair.

There’s a few candidates that Frank Seravalli mentions including Sam Bennett or Sam Reinhart, but Duclair makes the most sense at this time. Seravalli states, “One option, may be one of the easiest options, would be to take Duclair and unload him somewhere for free, have someone take him off your hands, you might even have to pay given the scenario that the Florida Panthers are in, to have someone bail you out in order to make that happen.” I think giving a player who scored 31 goals and 58 points last season away for free is a horrible mistake, but teams could really leverage the Panthers and their hands are tied.

What makes Duclair the team’s most likely trade candidate is the fact that the Panthers have played every game of the season to this point without him and Reinhart and Bennett are more impactful while also being less injury-prone. Here are three teams we could see trade with the Panthers for Duclair.

Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flame have really struggled this season after an overhaul to their star players. Hardly anyone is performing up to par and the team sits outside of the playoffs looking in with a record of 9-9-3. Scoring has been a real problem and players expected to be big contributors like Jonathan Huberdeau, Andrew Mangiapane, and Dylan Dube, just haven’t found their stride.

Adding a player like Duclair who is a former 30-goal scorer and can produce for a low cap hit could make all the difference. They are losing a significant amount of one-goal games and that extra offence could make a big difference in their season. The teams already made one big trade this past offseason, why not make another one?

Minnesota Wild

Like the Flames, the Minnesota Wild have gotten off to an average start and are underperforming compared to the expectations coming into this season. They are 9-9-2 and are sixth in the Central division. They are in the midst of a few tough seasons where a ton of cap space is taken up by buyouts and could use a player on a good contract to help get them through it. Duclair is the perfect fit as he’s under contract for one more season at just $3 million.

Ryan Hartman has been injured which has just stressed the need for some depth even more. They are one of the bottom teams in the league in goals and someone who put up the offensive numbers Duclair did last season could really help out in their middle-six. The Wild are in danger of not making the playoffs and taking a real step back after their very strong season in 2021-22. Many of their internal options have not been the solution thus far.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have possibly the worst depth forwards in the league this season. Their players aren’t particularly bad, they just have produced at a horrible rate. After the top-five, the team has gotten no help and it is a big reason for their 11-10-0 start. They will definitely be scouring the market for players they can acquire to help out their situation for a cheaper price. This is where Duclair comes in.

The Oilers have a bit of cap space to work with now while Evander Kane is on the LTIR, but will be right against the cap when he returns. This may force a move in a couple months, but the Oilers need immediate help in regards to scoring from their bottom-six. Despite a few goals from the third line last game, the bottom two lines have produced the least amount of points per game in the Connor McDavid/Leon Draisaitl era to this point. If the Oilers can acquire Duclair, it likely won’t cost much at all seeing as the Panthers must move him. He would be able to fit in anywhere on the wing in the top-nine. The Oilers can worry about moving a player like Kailer Yamamoto or Jesse Puljujarvi at a later time as it would clear enough cap space.
