Forwards

The top line of Robertson, Hintz, and Pavelski carried the offence last season for the Stars and will remain together. The issue of Robertson’s contract remains and he won’t be at training camp for day 1, but he should eventually join the team.

Marchment comes in to replace Alexander Radulov and should find himself on the second or third line. He produced at a very good rate last season, but keep in mind it was with the amazing offence of the Florida Panthers. This season with the Stars should present more of an opportunity for more ice time.

Gurianov should also be in the running for a spot on the second line, but I have him starting on the third as he will be tasked with scoring goals for that line. Studenic will have a full-time NHL role this season and should slot in on the third line as well. His production was minimal in his 33 games last season, but now that the cobwebs are off, he can grow.

Now that Kiviranta and Peterson have a season under their belt in the NHL, more will be expected of them. There is opportunity on the Stars for any member of the fourth line to move up. Glendening could also easily find himself starting on the third line to open the season, but a little bit of veteran leadership with the young players wouldn’t hurt.

Defence

The Stars just acquired Lundkvist from the Rangers and should give him every opportunity right away. The best option is to pair him with Lindell because of how well he plays all over the ice. Lundkvist may find himself on the third pairing, but he has the potential to step up and perform on the second pairing right now.

Suter would also be able to help Lundkvist develop at the NHL level, but for Heiskanen’s sake, they are paired together on the top line. They worked well together last season and the Stars are trying to return to the playoffs. As for the third pair, Hakanpaa should do the same for Harley as Lindell will do for Lundkvist and play well defensively so there is room for mistakes as they grow. The Stars have some solid young defensive talent that they will be trying to get into the lineup this season.

Goaltending

Oettinger played lights out in the playoffs last season and is undoubtedly the number one on the Stars. He is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL and is starting his new contract. As a backup, Dallas is fortunate to have Wedgewood who is paid very little and is consistently a great option to turn to.
