Max Pacioretty suffered two big injuries this season that kept him out for nearly every game. When he was in the lineup for five games, he scored three goals, showing that when healthy, the veteran will provide offensive contributions. Coming off of a four-year, $7 million AAV deal, with injuries and his age, Pacioretty isn’t going to get nearly as much money. He’s also at the point in his career where he will start to really wonder if he can win a Stanley Cup.
A playoff contender in need of scoring is going to pick him up for below market value and with the injury uncertainty, Pacioretty will likely only get a 1-2 year deal. There are a few teams out there where this term suits them best.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche will be looking for secondary scoring this offseason and might just lose J.T. Compher and Evan Rodrigues in free agency. After it was announced that Gabriel Landeskog will be out for the next full season, $7 million and a top-six spot on the wing opened up. They are in need of scoring from someone that will only be here for a year and the team has limited cap space, even with the freed up $7 million. Pacioretty seems like the perfect fit here as he can still be considered a very good goal-scorer, potting 100 goals in his last 229 games since being traded to Vegas.
St. Louis Blues
The St. Louis Blues are going to look quite different heading into next season than they did this season. A number of their veterans are gone and to finish up this season, they slotted in underappreciated or underrated players in their top-nine. Players like Sammy Blais, Jakub Vrana, and Kasperi Kapanen did very well once landing in St. Louis, but that is likely unsustainable throughout an entire season if the team wants to win.

With some cap space and the need for an actual proven top-six player, Pacioretty can come in and provide a year or two of service until Jake Neighbours fully develops into what the Blues expect him to be. Even if Pacioretty misses games, those wingers I mentioned have proven they can step into bigger roles and score when they get the chance.
Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames will be under new management this offseason, so it still remains to be seen as to what direction the team is headed in. The assumption is to continue to try and win. There will be a different feel in the locker room and new life. What has been a goal for the Flames since last offseason was to bring in some scoring help. The defence and goaltenders have the ability to play at an elite level even if they struggled this season.
As for the forwards, the third line outplayed the other lines and unlike 2021-22, the Flames struggled to score goals, losing them many one-goal games. This will need to be addressed, but like the Blues, the Flames have a young winger in Jakob Pelletier who is NHL-ready, but maybe not quite ready for top-six duties. One or two years will definitely change that and it would allow the team one great opportunity to win before they might lose some key players next offseason.
