The Winnipeg Jets are in trouble as it appears as though Pierre-Luc Dubois, Mark Scheifele, and Connor Hellebuyck have played their final games for them. None of them are interested in being extended in Winnipeg and the most logical course of action is for the team to pivot and replace them to stay competitive. Staying in playoff contention is their goal as there are some very good players who will remain with the team.
There might be some internal options to fill the top two centre spots, but what’s more likely is the Jets targeting centermen in free agency or in returns for their top players who should be on the move. Let’s take a look around the league at some options for them to rebound this offseason if the core does fall apart.
Free Agency
There really aren’t a ton of options for the Jets in free agency worth looking at in regards to centres. At best, the Jets are going to get a second line center for around $4-5.5 million AAV. As far as money goes for someone who will be expected to put up 55+ points from that role, it’s not a horrible investment. Certain players like J.T. Compher and Max Domi might require a couple extra years on their contracts, getting them five years or so, but more experienced options like Ryan O’Reilly and Jonathan Toews would provide great two-way play and require a shorter term commitment. If the Jets want to bring in someone who is more capable of handling the hardest matchups and most minutes, they might have to look at a trade.
Potential Trade Acquisitions
While two of the top trade candidates of the offseason are the Jets’ two centermen, there are a couple good options that appear to be on the trade block for them to acquire this offseason. Topping the list is Evgeny Kuznetsov and Kevin Hayes, but I would expect the Columbus Blue Jackets and possibly a couple other teams to also be in contact about them. There’s 2-3 years left on their deals, so it would give the Jets time to find other options as well, not to mention both have served as top line centres in the NHL already.
Internal Shifts
The final and least ideal option for the Jets to fill their centre positions is with internal candidates. I assume that Blake Wheeler is on the trade block, but with one year left and on a bad contract now, it will be hard to move him. He can play centre or the wing, so he is an option to move over to the middle on either of the top two lines. There’s only two other options I would even slightly consider right now, Adam Lowry and Cole Perfetti.

I can see Lowry potentially moving up to the second line, but that’s the highest he should go. Similarly, if desperate, Perfetti has played centre, but is going into his second year in the league and is only 21. He played the wing in his rookie season and I expect him to be there in a middle-six role again next season. The Jets have a lot of big decisions ahead of them, but options as well. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
