Joe Sakic Does it Again as Avalanche Win Another Trade

Ryan Johansen, Nashville Predators

Joe Sakic is the general manager that is most known for winning a lot of trades by a big margin and that trend continued today as he addressed the Colorado Avalanche’s most pressing concern, a second line center. It is well known that this free agent class is fairly weak, especially at center, so Sakic had to get creative and opted to address the need through a trade.

The Avalanche acquired Ryan Johansen (50% retained) for the signing rights to Alex Galchenyuk. The Nashville Predators cleared out some more cap space, but arguably could have gotten something better for the cap they retained and since there will be slim pickings in free agency this year. Colorado on the other hand benefited greatly and Sakic somehow pulled off a trade to avoid the mess that is free agency to overpay someone on a long-term deal. Instead, the Avalanche get someone who has been known to put up points in the past for half price for the next two years.

Johansen’s Potential With the Avalanche

The Predators have never been known as a team that scores a lot of goals, and recent years didn’t change that. Some of the players did put up some big numbers in 2021-22, but injuries got in the way of success this season. Johansen was one of the players who benefited from the team producing as he contributed 26 goals and 63 points in 79 games that season. He struggled more in 2022-23 as even when he was in the lineup, other top players were in and out of it. The former Predator’s centerman put up just 12 goals and 28 points in 55 games.

The Avalanche have been known to take struggling players and turn their career right back around. Valeri Nuchushkin is a recent great example of that. With Johansen now a member of the Avalanche, he should be able to return to the 60+ point player he has been in six seasons in his career. He will have much more help on the wing and the Avalanche are known to score.

Not only does this help shore up the top-six of Colorado, it doesn’t force them to push Alex Newhook into a spot in the lineup he isn’t yet ready for. It gives him a two-year cushion to build confidence as a third line center with easier matchups first. The Avalanche have themselves one of the best general managers in the league that keeps them at the top of the league.
