The New Jersey Devils had a good run, but it ultimately wasn’t their year. They made great strides and were contenders this season after much less was expected from them. Players have to be paid and young players are ready for full time NHL jobs, meaning others will be moving on. We’re going to discuss three players who won’t be back next season for the Devils.
Tomas Tatar
The first and probably most disappointing playoff performer in the league compared to what he does during the regular season is Tomas Tatar. He finished the 12 playoff games with one goal and this isn’t anything new. He has seven goals and 13 points in 52 career playoff games, totaling six points in his last four postseason appearances (35 games).
Although the struggles when it comes to performing in the playoffs hasn’t gotten better with time, he is still a solid middle-six winger during the regular season. The Devils for one, who will continue to be playoff contenders, don’t need that on their roster and also don’t have space. There are some young wingers pushing for spots who will not only cost less, but might be able to produce when it counts.
Damon Severson
It has been clear throughout this season that this is the final year Damon Severson is going to be with the Devils. He is a UFA this summer and despite having the skillset to be a first or second pair defenseman, has been slotted in lower on the deep blue line. In 2021-22 he was the team’s top defenseman as John Marino had yet to be acquired and Dougie Hamilton was dealing with injuries and hadn’t settled in.

Severson’s ice time and usage in different situations decreased and it impacted his output as well. He logged the sixth-most minutes among the Devils’ defense in the playoffs. Not only do the Devils not have the space or need for someone of his calibre to play on the third pairing and limited minutes, the cost won’t be worth it. Severson will seek out a team that is willing to provide more playing time.
Mackenzie Blackwood
Mackenzie Blackwood was phased out this season for the Devils as he has been ineffective for the past three seasons. His NHL career with the Devils started great , winning 32 of 64 starts in his first two seasons and posting a .916 SV%, 2.72 GAA, five shutouts, and 12.5 goals saved above average (GSAA). Whether it be injuries or other factors, he has fallen hard the past three seasons and despite being a RFA this summer, it’s hard to see the Devils even considering qualifying him.
Blackwood will likely be very tough to trade, so letting him become a free agent is the likely choice. With Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid as the team’s tandem, there’s no space or patience for Blackwood anymore. With a .897 SV%, 3.19 GAA and -22.1 GSAA over the past three seasons, another team is going to have to take the chance on him to rebound.
