Jason Zucker had a solid rebound season in which he was healthy and scored 27 goals and 48 points. It was the second most productive season of his career at age 31 and the most productive by a long shot since the trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Serving as a top-six winger, he was able to play up to the level expected of him in a contract year. This should give potential suitors some confidence giving him a 3-5 year deal for similar money. Here’s three teams that could use a player like Zucker.
Calgary Flames
With a new general manager coming in, the Calgary Flames are in store for some changes. The expectation is that some of the players with one year left on their deals will be dealt with, whether that is signing them to a new contract or trading them. But that doesn’t account for the lack of offense provided by the team last season and the need for a top-six winger.
Not only do the Flames need to get more goals and Zucker is one of the best options available for a decent price, they will also be thinking playoffs. He has 46 games of playoff experience and plays a hard game, logging 197 hits this season. The Flames were seen as a three line team this season, so Zucker can fit nicely into that mix for a mid-length term.
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers are rolling through one of the toughest postseason schedules with an average lineup. Next season there’s a lot of cap space that opens up for them and a need to add in a few areas. They have spread out the wealth at forward, going with three effective forward lines. Despite doing that, they still have Nick Cousins as the second line winger. He is contributing a bit, but the Panthers are going to want someone more proven and better all around. Zucker is that type of player.

He won’t be overly expensive so the team can still upgrade on defense, but he would both add complimentary scoring and physicality that the Panthers have been utilizing this postseason. It doesn’t look like there is anyone knocking at the door for a top-six spot internally for this team, so free agency is the route they should take for now.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes won by committee all season and were doing so the first two rounds of the playoffs until they ran into a goalie playing out of his mind. Despite that, they are going to be healthy next season and look a bit different up front. I expect them to still be looking for a top-six player, whether that be at center or on the wing. Since there aren’t very many solid centers available in free agency, they would have to resort to a trade to fill the need, or they can upgrade on the wing and allow Jesperi Kotkaniemi to continue to grow at center.
If that’s the case as I think it might be, the Hurricanes will have some money to work with and a spot to fill. Stefan Noesen and Jordan Martinook have filled in well in the top-six, but for an entire season, the Hurricanes will want better players in those left wing spots. Carolina has clearly struggled to score recently and Zucker didn’t this season.
