The Buffalo Sabres are a young and upcoming team that may still sneak into the playoffs this season. Even if they don’t they have a very good core group of players to build around. That being said, there are some players that don’t fit the mold of their team anymore and the Sabres will be moving on from in the offseason. Let’s take a look at who those players are.
Vinnie Hinostroza
Earlier this season the Sabres were looking for a potential team to trade Vinnie Hinostroza to as he doesn’t fit into the lineup or the future plans of the team. He is an unrestricted free agent after the season and currently holds a cap hit of $1.7 million. He isn’t going to get that much on his next deal, and it also won’t come with the Sabres.
Hinistroza has only gotten into 26 games for the Sabres this season as the young players have taken over and run with their opportunities. He is now 28 years old and has just two goals and 11 points this season. He is small, not physical, and is logging even less ice time than he did last season. The winger will be looking for an opportunity elsewhere to play more NHL games next season.
Craig Anderson
Craig Anderson continues to play very well for his age and for a team that doesn’t excel in the defensive end of the ice. The 41-year-old has a .913 save percentage and 6.4 goals saved above average this season and has mostly split the starts three ways with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Eric Comrie. Despite the great season put together by the veteran and the positive impact he’s had on the young goalies, it is time for him to move on.

As I mentioned, Buffalo is a very young team and that applies to their goaltending as well. With Luukkonen, Comrie, and the newly signed Devon Levi, they have more than enough talent in net to hold them over. The Sabres are in very good hands and have their pick in the future with who they have in their organization. Anderson has done his job well and I could see him even signing as a backup somewhere else in the offseason instead of calling it a career.
Kale Clague
The Sabres have a young and dynamic defensive group, and though it must be better defensively, they are headed in the right direction. Kale Clague fits the youth movement of the team, but hasn’t played well enough to warrant keeping around. At just 24 years old he has bounced around to a couple of teams and has had a tough time getting into games this season with seven of the defencemen ahead of him on the depth chart.
The Sabres acquiring Riley Stillman didn’t help Clague’s chances at getting into games and is also an indication that the Sabres needed to upgrade to someone who can provide more than him. Stillman and the six other defencemen not named Clague are all signed through next season while the 24-year-old is the only restricted free agent after the season. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Sabres don’t qualify him and he becomes a UFA in free agency.
