Tony DeAngelo, Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have officially moved on from Tony DeAngelo after trading for him and signing him just last offseason. He had one year left on his deal at $5 million AAV and as no trade was able to be executed, not even with 50% salary retention, the team bought him out. Now that he is a free agent, more teams might be looking to him as a cheap addition that could work out nicely for them for one season. Here are three that should top that list.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes were reportedly close to acquiring DeAngelo back from the Flyers before a trade was vetoed. Since then, they have dived into trying to bring in Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks. There’s no guarantee that trade will happen with at least the Pittsburgh Penguins also interested and the cap hit that will come with it. The Hurricanes do seem to be going all in as they are so close to the top of the mountain. DeAngelo had a strong season for them in 2021-22, but with Brent Burns on the team, there won’t be as much power-play time to go around and numbers might drop. After his second buyout, DeAngelo could be signed for cheap and as a replacement for Brett Pesce who appears to inevitably be headed out of town.

Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild are looking for ways to upgrade without spending a ton. Adding DeAngelo to the mix could be a great way to do that for a year or two. While they let John Klingberg walk in free agency and Calen Addison could use an upgrade on the power play right now, DeAngelo fits the bill of a cheap addition on a contract that will allow him to prove himself and to shore up the young right side of the defense. There still might be a buyout or trade of Alex Goligoski coming, so the defense won’t be too overfilled.

Pittsburgh Penguins

As mentioned above, the Penguins are another team openly in on acquiring Karlsson. As he seems like the prize on the right side that will provide a ton of offense, DeAngelo should be seen as the runner up that is much cheaper to acquire, but more volatile. If there is a captain or a group of leaders that would keep things on track, it’d be that of the Penguins. There were obvious differences between John Tortorella and DeAngelo, which was part of the decision to buy him out. Pittsburgh is tight on cap and will require Jeff Petry to be moved out first, which they are trying to do.

DeAngelo will get picked up by a team, it’s just a matter of when. He’s very talented offensively, and after New York, it seemed like he became a better teammate.

  1. There are certainly lots of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I provide the thoughts above as normal inspiration but clearly there are questions just like the one you carry up where the most important thing can be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I’m certain that your job is clearly identified as a good game. Both boys and girls really feel the affect of only a secondๆŠฏ pleasure, for the remainder of their lives.
