There’s no doubt that the Columbus Blue Jackets are building something very promising, but many thought that the success was going to come last season with the arrival of Johnny Gaudreau, the team’s biggest free agent signing in history. Nobody could have predicted the injury predicament the Blue Jackets would find themselves in, and although they finished at the bottom of the standings, a fully healthy team would have had a tough time competing in the very stacked Eastern Conference last season anyways.
Out of it came a year of experience for the many young players on the roster and a third overall selection of Adam Fantilli, just another great piece to the puzzle. As nobody could have predicted how the past year would have gone for the Blue Jackets, we’re going to take a look at all of the ups and downs since Gaudreau was signed and how it will impact the team moving forward.
Nothing Went Right for Columbus
Although bringing in Erik Gudbranson wasn’t exactly a bad thing, the amount of money given to him was. He received a four-year, $4 million AAV deal from the Blue Jackets to play on the third pairing while the team has a ton of defensemen available to them. Gudbranson will play every game and play a hard, defensive game, but he is not worth $4 million. This was likely to help convince Gaudreau to sign with them as they were teammates in 2021-22, but also to get better help defensively, overpaying for it.
Once the season started, injury news hit them hard. Zach Werenski suffered a season-ending injury just 13 games into the season after a strong start and Jakub Voracek played just 11 games before suffering a career-threatening injury.
Compared to the season prior in Calgary, Gaudreau had a down year offensively. He didn’t play badly, but he finished with 41 fewer points. Considering the difference in teams he played for and the linemates he had, it made sense. With an improvement this offseason, he points should rise to a point-per-game at the very least again in 2022-23.
Then to top it all off, the end of the season and offseason did not go as planned. The Blue Jackets finished second last in the league and didn’t win the draft lottery, dropping to third overall. Head coach Brad Larsen was also fired.
Blue Jackets Are Turning It Around
While that was a lot to take in during the first year of having Gaudreau, things have turned for the better for the team. The Blue Jackets brought in Mike Babcock with a completely different coaching attitude. This is a win taking into account his strong resume. The team also makes some big changes defensively to not only shore up the defense, but add talented players that stay healthy for a bare minimum cost. Ivan Provorov needed a fresh start and is a former seventh overall pick while Damon Severson also needed a better opportunity other than the third pairing in New Jersey.

While the draft lottery was definitely a bummer for the Blue Jackets dropping to the third pick, they still arguably got the second best option and a future number one centerman in Fantilli. It’s still up in the air whether he will make the team, but the future looks very bright in all areas. Gaudreau might have just got his centerman for the remainder of his contract.
