Max Comtois, Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks are going to be sellers at the 2023 Trade Deadline, we know that much. But which players will be moved. John Klingberg is almost guaranteed to be traded, but someone like Derek Grant or Adam Henrique will generate interest as well. The Ducks have an intriguing young player in Max Comtois who is capable of scoring despite his downward trend that they can dangle as trade bait for contenders.

Frank Seravalli noted that Comtois has the ability to slide up and down the lineup, has physicality in his game, and the potential to still be an impactful NHLer. He has a cap hit of $2.038 million for the rest of the season and then becomes a RFA. The positive is that he would be under team control for the team acquiring him, but with a qualifying offer of $2.44 million, he may not be worth it right now. Comtois has five goals and nine points in 37 games this season and could use a change in scenery. Let’s look at which teams that could be on.

Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have sorely needed to get deeper at forward this season. Their top players have carried the majority of the load this season and they have two players they claimed on waivers in the first half of 2022-23 in their lineup. There’s talk that they could look to acquire a top-six forward, but the price and cap hit may be too steep. They are legitimate contenders in the west this season and forward depth is their main area of concern.

Comtois could be a player on their radar as he is a middle-six forward that would fit in nicely on the third line beside Adam Lowry. Comtois has proven he can score in the past when he led the Ducks in scoring in 2020-21 with 16 goals and 33 points in 55 games. The 24-year-old isn’t overly expensive and could provide a style of play perfect for the playoffs.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking for someone exactly like Comtois at this year’s deadline. Over the last couple of seasons they’ve added diamonds in the rough like Blake Coleman, Barclay Goodrow, Brandon Hagel, and Nick Paul. All were able to produce and play great hockey once they joined this team. The Lightning seem to get the best out of their players and are looking to make a similar type of addition at this trade deadline that can help them get back to the Stanley Cup final for the fourth consecutive season without breaking the bank.

The Lightning are looking for a player with some grit, and Comtois has that. He has chosen to take the body first since he entered the NHL, amassing 348 hits in 183 games. The Lightning haven’t gotten what they’ve wanted from Vladislav Namestnikov and someone of cheap value like Comtois could come in and have a much greater impact. They have less than $1 million to work with, so with some cap retained, Comtois could be the perfect deadline acquisition.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to switch around some of their depth forwards this season as they try to hold down a playoff spot. Two players in particular that have been circulating in rumours are Kasperi Kapanen and Teddy Blueger. Moving the highly inconsistent Kapanen would free up $3.2 million for the remainder of this season and next while Blueger holds a $2.2 million cap hit until the end of the season.

The Penguins have failed to make it out of the first round in four consecutive seasons and could use a more physical player in their bottom-six that has the potential to score as well. Comtois hasn’t been any more consistent than Kapanen in terms of production, but he would allow cap freedom and will give the Penguins more physicality in their lineup. He is also younger and could still return to his earlier days in terms of offence.
