Chychrun to Oilers Trade Rumours: What to Make of It

Sources are split as to whether Jakob Chychrun to the Oilers trade rumours are true and accurate. The Edmonton Oilers are real contenders for the Stanley Cup this season. It makes more sense than not to do what must be done to shore up the weakest area of the team with the most concern. This won’t come cheap, and Ken Holland knows that and “has made it clear that he wants to go all in this year,” per Kevin Weekes.

A defenceman of Chychrun’s calibre could do wonders for the Oilers defence group and clear up any questions regarding the effectiveness. He would fit right in on the second pairing and even allow the Oilers to switch Bouchard and Ceci for better pairings. This would bump Brett Kulak down to the third pairing, but that’s okay. The defence will be very deep as a result.

What is a Return to the Coyotes for Chychrun from the Oilers?

If the Oilers are going to pull this deal off, Philip Broberg is almost a guaranteed top prospect heading the other way. He is the Oilers’ top prospect this season, but acquiring a stud defenceman like Chychrun on a team-friendly deal for three more seasons isn’t going to be easy. The Oilers are in win-now mode which means Holland’s mentality of preserving first round picks and top prospects should go right out the window. Sometimes an opportunity arises that fits the needs of the team.

The Oilers can’t wait for Broberg to possibly turn into a talent like Chychrun in about three years. Rather, they can use their top prospect to bolster their team right now. Broberg would not be enough in a return for Chychrun since there isn’t any guarantee the young Oilers’ defender will be as good. Some insiders think Broberg is a non-starter in a trade. Regardless, a first round pick will need to head to Arizona as well as a top prospect. Given the age of the core group in Edmonton, the deals they’re on, and the window to compete for the Cup, a trade involving the Oilers top prospect makes sense.

To make the cap work, another player, likely a Tyson Barrie type, would also be heading to Arizona. Barrie isn’t a cap dump, but the Oilers have Evan Bouchard and would have Chychrun to run the power play. This would help the Coyotes fill the hole in their lineup, help the Oilers complete the trade without cap concerns, and be enough to help each team in the direction they are heading in.

Mixed Reports Surrounding Oilers’ Involvement

Daniel Nugent-Bowman reported that a team source said, “too rich for our blood”, when asked if the Oilers are in on the Chychrun sweepstakes.

Though Mark Spector said that his understanding is that the Oilers are not in on any Chychrun talks, he suggests Jesse Puljuajrvi in a return as expected. He has an ongoing history in writing any negative things he can about Puljujarvi at every turn.

Darren Dreger responded to Spector saying, “For many teams, Edmonton included, meeting the asking price is a significant challenge. However, the Oilers have expressed interest and stayed in communication with those involved. Doesn’t mean they’re actively trying to make a trade. As I reported, same with other clubs as well.” The pressure appears to be on the Coyotes to make a move if their timeline is to move Chychrun before the season. That way there is little chance he injures himself and Arizona can maximize the return.

Weekes stated on ESPN radio that, “Jakob Chychrun to the Oilers is starting to pick up heat faster than expected.” He also reported saying, “Ken Holland might have a few more tricks up his sleeves, so keep an eye on the Oilers.” This statement is in regards to Holland managing to sign Kane for dirt-cheap in the middle of last season and bring him back on a very team-friendly deal. Not only that, but he brought back Kulak for much less than that type of defenceman was being signed for in free agency. Holland built a team in Detroit that won three Stanley Cups, so the confidence is there that he can do the same in Edmonton.

What is your feeling on the Chychrun to Oilers trade rumours? Do the Coyotes manage to move the defenceman before the season?

In addition, a lot of young women who become pregnant tend not to even try and get health care insurance because they fear they couldn’t qualify. Although some states right now require that insurers produce coverage regardless of pre-existing conditions. Rates on all these guaranteed options are usually larger, but when taking into consideration the high cost of medical care it may be some sort of a safer way to go to protect your own financial future.
