Forwards
With the strong forward group, it is likely they spread the wealth and run at least three lines pretty equally. The Kraken have no elite talent on the team just yet, but have a couple of players who can surely grow into that. Beniers stepped into the NHL to end last season and impressed. He should already be given the top line centre role even though the lines should be generally equal. There is lots of skill there, and paired with Bjorkstrand, can fuel each other to produce a lot of points. Donato is also a solid addition to that line and people tend to forget how much talent the winger has.
The second line should look familiar as all three members were chosen in the expansion draft. They were three of the more popular and better picks taken by the Kraken. The line has chemistry and can provide above average goal-scoring and point production for the team. But a line to watch with a ton of pedigree is going to be the third line with Schwartz and Burakovsky, both recent Stanley Cup winners. When healthy, Schwartz can still produce at a strong rate while Burakovsky is coming off a career year in goals (22), points (61), and almost everything else. Those two will help Wennberg get back to the player he was a few years ago.
The team is happy to have Tanev back. He is a leader and provides a ton of energy and physicality to the team. This fourth line will likely play more than fourth lines on other teams as they can still produce offensively. Geekie is a name to watch as he has the potential to be much better. Opportunity should present itself for him throughout the season, and don’t be surprised if he moves up the lineup to at least the third line eventually.
Defence
Seeing as Dunn is the most offensively-gifted defenceman on the team and still generally young, Larsson provides stability and support to the top pairing. It allows Dunn to take more chances, and with offensive threats on every forward line, it will help produce more offence.
Schultz is the big addition to the defence group as he replaces Mark Giordano’s spot in the lineup. Schultz provides scoring from the back-end, and just like the top pairing, a defensive-defenceman in Oleksiak is partnered with him. This tends to work for defensive units because the positioning and execution rubs off on each of the partners.
Soucy is the team’s hidden gem that could play anywhere if need be. He should be paired with a more inexperienced Borgen. Together, they form a stronger two-way pairing who can both provide some offence and strong defence. Fleury will be in the mix and should see some action this season as he is set to take the next step.
Goaltending
The Kraken have a problem in net with three NHL goaltenders. Jones is an extra option if the poor play in net by the Seattle goalies carries over to this season. It’s not likely it will be as bad as neither Grubauer or Chris Driedger had shown signs of regressing before last season.
Grubauer will be the team’s starter, but Jones and Driedger will battle it out for the backup role. Driedger’s contract is a reason to give him another chance, but Jones had a slightly better season last year for a very poor defensive team.
