3 Head Coaches Linked to Rangers’ Vacant Position

Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad, New York Rangers
The New York Rangers and former head coach Gerard Gallant agreed to part ways after the team lost in the first round and the end-of-season meeting didn’t go great. It is possible Chris Drury is using Gallant as a scapegoat after the trade deadline acquisitions didn’t work out. But from Drury’s perspective, all he could do was add the very best players he could with very limited cap space, and he got that done.
Gallant was with the Rangers for just two seasons, but coached them to a 99-46-19 record, a second and third place finish in the division, and two playoff round wins. He has never lasted more than three years with a team and the Rangers were the fourth team he coached in the NHL. With him gone, Molly Walker reported that there are three potential replacements for him, Mark Messier, Bruce Boudreau, and Peter Laviolette.

Peter Laviolette

Laviolette parted ways with the Washington Capitals after their season ended, but is still looking to coach a team to win another Stanley Cup. He stated that his Stanley Cup Final record is 1-2 and he isn’t good with that. The Rangers have the personnel to be able to get Laviolette that second Cup and his 752-503-150 record speaks for itself.

Bruce Boudreau

Boudreau was mistreated by the Vancouver Canucks and parted ways with them part-way through this season. He also isn’t done coaching and would be a welcomed addition to the Rangers locker room with his unique and uplifting personality. He has a very impressive resume and usually sticks around coaching one team for a while. The only season where his team was under .500 was the Canucks this season and he didn’t get a chance to change that. His coaching record is 617-342-128.

Mark Messier

Messier is an interesting candidate as many know what he did for the Rangers, spending 10 seasons with them, serving as captain, and leading them to a Stanley Cup in 1994. A leadership award is named after him in the NHL, so I think he knows a thing or two about winning and driving players to win.
