The New York Rangers have loaded up for what is hopefully a long playoff run, but they have too much talent and not enough cap space to be able to keep everyone around for next season. Not only that, some players have not performed as well as they have been needed to and changes will be coming. Here’s a look at four players who won’t be back next season for the Rangers.
Vladimir Tarasenko
Vladimir Tarasenko is one of the big trade deadline acquisitions of the Rangers and he still has many years left in the NHL. The sniper will surely be looking for a long-term deal with significant money in the offseason and that’s just not something the Rangers have. While Patrick Kane would also need a new contract, the thinking is that New York will be able to extend Kane at less years and at a cheaper price than Tarasenko.
Tarasenko was a point-per-game player for the first time in his career last season with the St. Louis Blues and like nearly everyone else on that team, he regressed this season. He was having an alright season in St. Louis, but wasn’t scoring at the rate we are used to seeing from him. Once he came to the Rangers, his production has actually dropped from 0.75 points-per-game to 0.65. There is less room to stand out with all the talent in New York this season, but the 31-year-old will enjoy this season and move on with a bigger contract than he can get with the Rangers next season.
Tyler Motte
Tyler Motte was not a good trade deadline acquisition for the Rangers last season, so it was odd for them to once again go back to the well and acquire him again this season. This time around he has been much better with three goals and six points in 16 games as opposed to no points in nine games in 2021-22.

Motte is one of the Rangers’ UFA forwards at the end of the season and he will most likely hit free agency as he did last summer. There isn’t room for him higher up than the fourth line and he should be able to find that opportunity elsewhere with a bit more money on a contract. The Rangers have some options for cheaper and will likely also look to the free agent market during the summer.
Niko Mikkola
Niko Mikkola was just a short-term solution to the hole the Rangers had on the left side of their third pairing. Early in the season, Libor Hajek and Zachary Jones got equal shots at claiming that role, but neither did well enough to warrant keeping up in the NHL. Ben Harpur, a seventh defenceman at best, claimed the spot and has played there for most of the season until Mikkola arrived.
Mikkola has done well enough in that role and is an NHL defenceman, but next season should see another shot given to Hajek and Jones as they will be one more year experienced and possibly ready to play. The 26-year-old Mikkola only has five assists in 73 games, but is above average defensively. He is a third pairing defenceman at best that the Rangers shouldn’t need after this season is over. He’s a UFA and will test the market.
Jaroslav Halak
The Rangers took a big chance on Jaroslav Halak this season as he had a season to forget in Vancouver in 2021-22. His tenure in New York didn’t start well at all and he only made up for it by playing very well in the second half. Instead of a young Alexandar Georgiev, the Rangers thought Igor Shesterkin could use a veteran presence behind him.
Halak will be 38 at the start of next season and is a UFA after the season, making it easy for the Rangers to move on from him and maybe look to a younger backup. Halak’s last solid backup season came in 2019-20, so as a team looking to compete for the Stanley Cup, they shouldn’t take a chance again with the veteran.
