Panthers Have Time & Cap Space to Keep Bobrovsky for Now

Sergei Bobrovsky, Florida Panthers

It’s well known that the Florida Panthers have been deep into cap trouble this season and it is a cause for the regression from last season. Not only have they been forced to roster less than the 23-man limit this season, they are going to be forced into trading a forward to stay cap compliant soon. It is likely one of Anthony Duclair, Sam Reinhart, or Sam Bennett are going to be moved before Duclair and Patric Hornqvist return from the long-term injured reserve (LTIR).

The Panthers lost six of their key players from last season in some way or another. Duclair isn’t gone, but hasn’t played a game this season. Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar were traded, while Claude Giroux, Mason Marchment, and Ben Chiarot all left in free agency. Despite that, the cap problems intensified.

It’s not ideal having a goaltender make $10 million AAV if he isn’t in the conversation for the Vezina Trophy year after year. That is what the Panthers are dealing with and a reason for some of their cap problems. Sergei Bobrovsky hasn’t just not been one of the best goalies in the league since his arrival in Florida, he has been overtaken by the Panthers’ future franchise goaltender Spencer Knight. The young netminder already has a deal signed that will see him earn $4.5 million AAV for the next three seasons, emphasizing the need to move on from Bobrovsky.

Panthers’ Cap Will Work Itself Out This Offseason

The Panthers aren’t out of the race yet, but sometimes it’s not the worst thing for a team to take one season to reset rather than stay a middle of the pack team. Though the team has played better and are within a few points of a wildcard spot, a lot of cap space will be naturally cleared up in the offseason. First off, the Panthers have had to deal with a significant amount of dead cap this season by paying Keith Yandle $5.391 million and Scott Darling $1.183 million. Yandle’s buyout hit drops to $1.241 million for the next two seasons while the Panthers don’t have to pay Darling anymore after this season.

One of Duclair, Reinhart, or Bennett’s cap hit is being moved off the books in the next month barring any major injury to another top player, so at least $3 million more gone. Patric Hornqvist’s contract is also up after the season to free up another $5.3 million. The team doesn’t have to worry about any major extensions coming in the offseason other than Knight’s, and the cap is projected to finally start rising.

It would also be very difficult to trade Bobrovsky at this point in time considering he has a no-move clause until the summer of 2024 where he has to submit a 16-team no-trade list. Not only would he have to accept a trade to a team willing to take him on, the full amount wouldn’t likely be moved and it would be a steep price. Expect the Panthers to bounce back in a big way next season. The hope is Bobrovsky can play up to par with his contract so better results for the team come and it is easier to move on from him before his contract is over.
