I’m going to start this by saying that Patrick Kane has a full no-move clause and will decide which team(s) he wants to go to at the trade deadline, if any. Having said that and without being in the mind of Kane, there are eight teams that have emerged as possible landing spots for the Chicago Blackhawks’ star. The Blackhawks may have a choice between a few teams to strike a deadline deal with, but for Kane, he has to think about who has a real shot at winning and who he will be playing with.
8. Los Angeles Kings
Among potential landing spots, the Los Angeles Kings come in as the lowest percent chance. They surely do have the prospects, but a spot in the lineup and cap space will be a tough workaround. As we saw with the Bo Horvat deal, a player with a larger cap hit can certainly be moved out. That’s what would have to happen if the Kings were to trade for Kane. They would be swapping out someone under contract like Alex Iafallo or Viktor Arvidsson who have term left and a similar cap hit if Kane were to be 50 percent retained.
The Kings have a young lineup and a good amount of money tied up. This deal could not only be used to help them this season, but also for the summer when the plan is to sign players like Gabriel Vilardi and Rasmus Kupari. What the Kings should be focused on adding more so than Kane is players that will help keep more pucks out of their net. They are already 11th in the NHL in goals but 26th in goals against.
7. Toronto Maple Leafs
Next up is the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have a real need for a top-six player and Kyle Dubas should be looking to do whatever he can to help get the team out of the first round in the last year of his deal. The team has cap space to work with since Jake Muzzin isn’t likely returning this season. With a deep defensive group, there is an argument to be made that their forward depth needs more addressing.
To make a deal to acquire Kane, the Maple Leafs would have to dip into their prospects for a higher end one and also send Alex Kerfoot back. He hasn’t been nearly as effective this season and has even spent time on the fourth line. If Kane were to enter into that top-six alongside goal-scorers like Auston Matthews and William Nylander, he could not only provide insight into what it takes to win a Stanley Cup, but also set them up for even more goals.
6. New Jersey Devils
The reason the New Jersey Devils aren’t higher on this ranking is because they are heavily linked to Timo Meier. He fits their description of exactly what they’re looking to add at the deadline. There is still a chance that they don’t land the San Jose Sharks’ winger, so if that’s the case, expect rumours to heavily increase with Kane.

Acquiring just a rental at the deadline isn’t the Devils’ plan, but they are also playing very well this season and have a fair shot at making a deep playoff run. The goal is to have sustained success for the future as well. But the team has the assets to make this move if they wanted.
5. Carolina Hurricanes
With the season-ending injury to Max Pacioretty, the Carolina Hurricanes, who are one of the Stanley Cup favourites, are looking to utilize their cap space and add a top-six player. It remains to be seen whether that is going to be a centerman or a winger. The need for a second line centre has been there all season considering neither Jesperi Kotkaniemi or Paul Stastny has solidified their spot and impressed.
But the Hurricanes were also expecting Pacioretty to be part of their team this season and have a spot on the wing available for Kane. He would fit nicely on the first or second line and the Hurricanes could work with that by moving Martin Necas over to centre. The Hurricanes could do with a bit more offence in a season where they should go all-in.
4. Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars are looking for a top-six winger, and with their cap situation, can’t afford to add anything more than a rental. They have impressed this season and sit first in their division. They are a threat to make some noise in the west and also have a couple of players they would like to get off of their roster if they can in Denis Gurianov and Radek Faksa.
In making a deal with the Blackhawks for Kane, it would allow the Stars to move one of the two contracts to make a deal work, but also have the added bonus of that cap hit being off the books for next season and beyond as well. Forward depth was a problem last season for the Stars in the regular season and playoffs. They aren’t going to make the same mistake this season by not addressing it ahead of time.
3. Calgary Flames
The Flames are another team like the Stars who doesn’t have the cap space to add anyone who is signed past this season. They are good down the middle, full on defence, and nothing is happening in net, so the Flames’ deadline plans are fairly simple, add a top-six winger who can provide offence. Kane fits the bill perfectly.
Brad Treliving also stated the team is looking for a rental. This has been a tough season for the Flames after a number of big changes to personnel, but they also can’t waste a year by missing the playoffs. They have the cap space to make a deal work and picks/prospects that would entice the Blackhawks.
2. Vegas Golden Knights
What made me rank the Vegas Golden Knights above the Flames is each of their places in the standings and the fact that Vegas is in America. Kane just so happens to be an American, so that could play a part in his decision. Another is the difference in coaches. Darryl Sutter and Kane may not mesh well together. Though Bruce Cassidy isn’t exactly known as a player’s coach, he still isn’t close to Sutter.
Mark Stone may very well be shut down until at least the playoffs, and since Vegas has always had the mentality of go big or go home, adding Kane would fit the bill. He would be able to slot right into the hole in the top-six and add offence. No winger competes with Stone when it comes to a great two-way game, but the Golden Knights must do something as they’re starting to slip and have cap space available now.
1. New York Rangers
The New York Rangers will come as no surprise to you to be at the top of the potential landing spots for Kane at the deadline. He has long been linked to them and the Blackhawks have interest in the Rangers’ young players and prospects. The Rangers made it to the final four last season and are in a good place to get a chance at getting back there.
New York is where Kane is from, so returning home for a playoff run with potential for more could make the Rangers his top choice. Plus he would be reunited with his favourite linemate to play with, Artemi Panarin. The Rangers will remain at the centre of Kane rumours until he is either traded somewhere else or the Rangers acquire someone different.
